The first essayist, Montaigne, chose the word ‘essay’ for his work from the French word for ‘attempt’ (essai, essayer). For Montaigne, Emerson, and co, the essay was exploration & curiosity, a free-ranging attempt to learn about something by writing about it, a struggle in words with a question the author doesn’t have an answer to.
